I think that it is just the sheer imperfection that makes a villain easy to create. You can just play around with them; make them be whoever you want them to be. Heroes usually are more likable and easier to relate to (save for a few exceptions).
On the other hand, maybe it's just human nature. It's very easy to point out a person's flaws outright, but you have to delve deeper in order to find a characteristic that you actually like about them.

Ok, my two cents.

If you really want to mix things up, there's the 'anti-hero.' Which I define as a person
who does the right thing for the wrong reasons or using the wrong method.

For instance: In "Full-metal Alchemist," the protagonist uses Satanic power to try
and restore his and his brother's bodies. (So I used the word Satan. Sue me. ;) )

Anyway... anti-heroes can be a good choice for anyone who's looking for a more realistic character.

That's actually a good idea. I was considering the use of those in my novel that I'm writing (it's fail- don't ask about it)
You seem depressed by the way you came in.
Tell us a story, I know you're not boring.

He who fights with monsters should be careful lest he thereby become a monster.
